Another miss from Disney at the box office – the studio’s latest original animated film flopped among holiday moviegoers…it’s the latest flop for them.
Of course, we are talking about “desire” … with Ariana DeBose as the main character and Chris Pine The big bad and a bunch of other lovable side characters. Unfortunately, none of that was enough… as “Wish” only made $31.7 million through its 5-day “weekend.”
The counting of ticket sales had started from Wednesday itself, but as Sunday came… the performance of “Kaash” was very low. It was estimated at $45-$50 million in those same 5 days.
It also did not fare well internationally, earning only $17.3 million overseas… bringing its total worldwide sales to approximately $49 million. In layman’s terms, the movie flopped – and it came in third behind ‘Napoleon’ (#2) and the ‘Hunger Games’ prequel (#1, again).
This isn’t good news for the Mouse House… which usually dominates the Thanksgiving window. Up until last year – when their other original animated feature “Strange World” performed disappointingly – Disney had hit movies around this time of year… including “Encanto,” “Coco” and others, all of which Made a splash. Lots of money right out of the gate.
The strange thing is that “Wish” actually got good reviews and good audience reception… so it’s not clear what exactly the problem was. it’s possible sag strike The promotion for this film was hampered… but it also ended well before its release date, so it’s a bit of a mystery.
Keep in mind, this is the latest failure for Disney this year – others include the last ‘Indiana Jones’ film, “The Haunted Mansion,” “The Marvels” and others. Really tough year.
